Cultural Identity

I also considered mainland China as my home since my mother was from China, and I have a lot of relatives living there. I was only eight months when the first time visiting China. I have a lot of great memories when traveling to my mom’s hometown during my vacations, I love Chinese people and the land.

However, I’m from Taiwan, the country I lived and grew up.

Taiwan (Republic of China) China (People’s republic of China)

Taiwanese culture and Chinese culture have a deep connection.

Taiwan and China have the almost same culture, and even their names are similar. However, they have two completely different government systems. Taiwan has its own government, military, and land. Taiwan’s government was built in mainland china and later on moved to Taiwan following the Chinese Civil War. Chinese civil war is a war between two parties of the Republic of China, the Chinese Nationalist Party, and the Chinese communist party. Apparently, the communist party won and took over the mainland, it’s the “China” you see today. However, the Republic of China wasn't destroyed but moved to Taiwan.

Before the government came, Taiwan was colonized by Japan for fifty years, so it retained many Japanese cultures. For example, there is a lot of Japanese-style architecture in Taiwan, such as Washitsu still exists in some old houses. There is one in my grandmother’s home.

As time passed, Taiwan became a country with diverse culture, there are not only people Ethnic Chinese and native indigenous people but also many different ethnicities living in Taiwan such as Vietnamese, Indonesian, and the Philippines.

For this reason, you can find that Taiwan has not only Chinese culture, but also different cultures from different countries. Every culture is an important part to compose Taiwanese culture.

This is the cultural identity poster of Taiwan.

Your clips in your post are really interesting and I really want to visit your country in someday. By the way, I also studied Pop culture with Professor Gitte before. Thank for sharing your culture.

    2. Hi Joy, it was great that I could learn something about Taiwanese history from your post. Korea also was colonized by Japan for a long time in old days. I've been to Taiwan once before, and it was a really good experience even though I stayed for a short time. It seems that there are many cool rock bands in your country! I hope that I can visit Taiwan again next time. -Jeehye
