Reflection
Through pop culture class, I have learned that culture will never be defined as a term or one sentence, but it is a big and large concept and it is everything around us. The easiest way to start to know a culture is to learn the visible parts such as clothing, language, and arts. It can be defined as three parts: think, make, and do. People tend to feel comfortable with the culture that they are familiar with. However, people used to feel shocked or stereotyped by other cultures because of their ignorance. The appearance of a culture is like an iceberg, people hardly understand the whole picture of a culture. As human beings, people have to learn about culture through imitation and social interaction. In the United State, culture is like a salad bowl since people from different countries keep coming here and they keep their original cultural identities.
My aha moment was that I didn’t expect culture to be a large subject that is taught in a class. After the preliminary understanding of culture class, I think culture should be a subject taught in college because it is important. For example, students have to learn culture to understand where they are and who they are.

I didn’t know that stereotyping and culture shock was based on ignorance of the culture. Iceberg is the concept that I have learned most from this unit, and it became an important part of my knowledge of culture. After learning the concept of the iceberg, I will stand from a different perspective instead of sticking to one viewpoint when I learn about a new culture.
